Photo: Contributed A young man died after a Mountie opened fire on a truck in the Kootenays, according to BC police The Independent Investigations Bureau is now investigating the incident, which unfolded early Wednesday morning in the Creston area. In a press release, RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said a Creston Mountie initiated a traffic stop on a truck at about 3:35 a.m. after finding it parked on a street. “As the officer exited his police vehicle, the truck allegedly reversed, striking the officer, who fired his weapon in return,” Clark said. “Around 3:45 a.m., the truck was located in a ditch with the driver suffering from a gunshot wound.” Clark said officers provided medical aid until medics arrived. The driver later succumbed to his injuries. Recognized by the IIO as “new”. The IIO, the police’s watchdog agency, is now investigating the shooting. “The evidence of what happened on the road is the subject of the IIO’s investigation,” the agency said in a statement. “IIO researchers have been deployed to the area to begin research.” The incident occurred on View Road, located just off Highway 3A north of Creston. The highway remained closed for almost 12 hours after the incident.
