Kyrgios, who will appear in the Wimbledon quarter-finals tomorrow, is accused of assaulting model Chiara Passari. “ACT Police can confirm that a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on August 2 in relation to a charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,” police said on Tuesday. Lawyer Jason Moffett, who is representing Kyrgios, confirmed to The Canberra Times that his client was aware of the charge. “It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” he said. “The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. “As the matter is before the court … he has no comment at this stage, but in due course we will issue a media release.” The maximum sentence for the charge is two years. A further statement from Johannessen Legal, which represents Kyrgios, sought to clarify the situation further. “At this time, the allegations are not considered facts by the Court and Mr. Kyrgios is not considered charged with an offense until the First Appearance,” it said. “Until the Court formally accepts that the Prosecution will bring a charge and that the charge before the Court will apply to the person subpoenaed, it may be misleading to the public to describe the subpoena in any way other than a formal direction to appears to be facing complaints, the exact nature of which is neither certain at this time nor confirmed by either the Prosecutor’s Office or Mr. Kyrgios. “While Mr Kyrgios is committed to addressing any and all allegations as they become clear, taking the matter seriously does not justify any misunderstanding of the process Mr Kyrgios is required to follow.”
