On the fourth day of Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek return after overwhelming defeats from both home favorites on Wednesday, when Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu retired in the second round at Central Court. Nadal will hope to step up his effort for a third-place finish at the All England Club, following a tough first-round win over Francisco Cerundolo, with Novak Djokovic already in top form against Thanasis Kokkinakis in the second round. It’s Ricardas Berankis at Center Court for the Spaniard today. While Swiatek wants to get on the grass in the Grand Slam, having added a second title to the French Open just this month. The dominant Pole faces Dutch player Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in Court One in the second round, after beating Jana Fett for the last time out. As British interest wanes, Katie Boulter wants to expand her hot streak, but faces a difficult task against sixth place, Karolina Pliskova, first in Center Court. While Coco Gauff’s star shines in SW19 and the American teenager will hope to negotiate the second round match with Mihaela Buzărnescu. Sarah Beth Gray returns to Wimbledon four months after heart surgery
Sarah Beth Gray is aiming for a Wimbledon singles debut next year after recovering from heart surgery to take her place in the doubles draw. Gray and Yuriko Miyazaki were well beaten by fifth seed Ena Shibahara and Asia Muhammad in the first round on Wednesday night, but it was a victory for Gray who just came out on the field. Earlier this year, a regular check-up by the Lawn Tennis Association revealed an irregular heartbeat and began a series of events that ended with Gray at a surgeon’s table in late February. He told the PA news agency: “It was a big shock. I did a routine check-up and they realized that there was a problem with my heart rate. They did not really know what it was like in the early days, it was just, “we need to look at it further and go for more checks.” “I was not thinking much about it at the time, but it all ended pretty quickly and it was all very scary and overwhelming and I was not sure if I would be safe to go back to racing. But I was in big hands all the time and luckily they managed to fix the problem. It was a routine process they did. It took some time to overcome the shock of everyone mentally and physically, but now I’m back and I’m really happy and looking forward to the years to come. “ Looking back, Gray realizes that there were signs of the problem, but she would not have asked for help if the test had not been done. “I thought maybe it was low blood sugar or something, if you feel a little swaying, if you may not have fed well enough,” he said. “They explained to me that the symptoms were from the heart.” The 26-year-old from Liverpool knows very well what can happen if such issues are not taken into account. “With the abnormality, if the heart goes too fast with the pressure I put on my heart, it could be dangerous,” he said. “There were some players who may not have had these checks and had an unfortunate situation when they were on the pitch. It is certainly amazing that the LTA had it in place. Going forward, I hope that many more players will be controlled “. Gray returned to action in the tournament in May, but admitted that his mental recovery was as difficult as his physical. “Fortunately everything was in Liverpool and so I lived with my family and it was amazing to have the support,” he said. “I have a very large family, I am one of the seven, so they were very close to me and they gave me a lot of support. “I think it was as much of a shock to them as it was to me because I’re the family athlete, the really good one who kicks everyone else to tell them to get in shape. Due to the break, I was quite tired. So things got harder and I thought, “Is this safe?” I checked in with the doctors and they reassured me that everything was safe and well. “I just had to trust it.” Gray, who is at the top of her 292 career rankings, needs to be checked every six months, but she can look forward to the rest of her career with confidence. It could have been a very different result, with Gray saying: “There are a lot of athletes following this path who have not cleared up to be safe to return to racing and that was a potential thing that could have happened to me. . It was hard to put my mind around my mind, because, although sport is not forever, you want to call time your own way. For it to be potentially something that was taken away from me, it was very difficult at that time. “I am very, very grateful and grateful that everything went as it did and I can continue to strive for the best to move forward, look ahead and gain strength from this situation. I’m already thinking about next year. I really want to try and rise in the rankings to try to be in the main draw of the time “. (Getty Images) Jack Rathborn30 June 2022 11:00 1656582616
“Who knows where I will appear”: Serena Williams is not committed to the future of Wimbledon
Going out to play singles for the first time since leaving Center Court early and crying after suffering an injury in the opening round 12 months ago, Williams was rusty and prone to mistakes. The will remained and, cheered by a crowd of supporters, it seemed that he could stumble over the finish line after a set and then save a match in the 12th game of the decisive match. Williams, on the other hand, suffered just their third defeat in the first round in a grand slam, falling 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7) in a decisive tiebreak at 22.35 after three hours and 10 minutes. Harriet Dart did not outperform herself after the second round of Wimbledon
Harriet Dart does not allow herself to think about what a good career at Wimbledon could do for her. The 25-year-old became the 10th British player to advance to the second round – the biggest since 1984 – as she defeated Spain’s Rebeka Masarova 6-1 6-4 in Court 12. Doing well at Wimbledon as a Briton can have significant benefits in increasing profile and attracting potential sponsors, but Dart does not consider this. “To be honest, this is not something I have thought about,” he said. “For me, it’s just going out there, doing the best I can. “If I can continue to win games, that’s great. Being able to put a good level in every race is very important to me, just being able to consistently produce a good level from week to week. I feel like I have really shown this in recent weeks. Djokovic is open to joining Nadal, Federer and Murray in Laver Cup
Watching the “Big Four” of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray play together for the same team could be possible at the fifth Laver Cup in London this year. Earlier Wednesday, Britain’s Murray was named the third member of the six-man European Team along with Federer and Nadal, leaving tennis fans to enjoy the prospect of Djokovic joining his long-awaited AT-approved opponents. Named after the great Australian Rod Laver, the three-day team event pits six of Europe’s top players against six from the rest of the world. “It would be very unique. “It’s a chance,” Djokovic told reporters after retaining his place in the third round of Wimbledon. My agent is in contact with the Laver Cup team. We have an agreement that there will be a decision after the completion of Wimbledon “. Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Murray have dominated men’s tennis for the past two decades, winning 65 Grand Slam titles between them. The O2 Arena in London, which hosted the men’s ATP finals from 2009 to 2020, will host the Laver Cup from September 23-25 with Team Europe, led by Bjorn Borg, having won all the previous versions. Team World leader John McEnroe has named Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman as three members of his team. Djokovic played in the second edition of the tournament in 2018. “The Laver Cup is the only competition where you can have all the big opponents, the big three, the big four players on the same team,” Djokovic said. “Of course, it is a very different and exciting idea for us players, but also for fans around the world. The O2 Arena is a well-known place for me and for us players … I think the tradition here in Britain for tennis has contributed to a very successful event (ATP Finals) for more than 10 years. So, of course, it would be nice to play there again. “ Serbian Novak Djokovic changes his shirt during a tennis match alone with the Australian …
