Today marks the return of Nadal, back for the first time since 2019 and fresh from opening up a lead in the race to finish with the most men’s grand slam titles with 22. That’s compared to defending champion Novak Djokovic, who has 20 titles, with the six-time champion up and running after swiftly moving into the second round with a hard-fought four-set win over Soonwoo Kwon. The other finalist from SW19 last year, Matteo Berrettini, is back and in fine form after defending his Queen’s title and the Italian will be hoping to go one further this year, opening up against Cristian Garin on Court One. The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Iga Swiatek and she opens up her championships on Centre Court against Jana Fett, taking the traditional slot on the first Tuesday of play after defending women’s champion Ash Barty’s sudden retirement. There is more Wimbledon royalty in action on day two with Williams making her long-awaited return. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is back in singles action after cruelly being forced to retire from her first round match at SW19 last year and the 40-year-old, third up on Centre Court, looks to ignite her comeback from a hamstring injury when she takes on Harmony Tan. Elsewhere there is intriguing matches involving Coco Gauff and Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Court Two, while the charismatic Nick Kyrgios is hoping to cement his status as a dark horse this year with a first-round encounter against Paul Jubb on Court Three. Murray through to second round
Andy Murray made a brilliant return to Centre Court last night with a comeback victory over James Duckworth after losing the first set and the 35-year-old Scot relished the chance to play in front of a packed crowd at Wimbledon again. “It is amazing to be back out here again with a full crowd,” said the two-time Wimbledon champion. “I’m getting on a bit now so I don’t know how many opportunities I will get here. “I’m pleased I managed to get through and hopefully I will get another match here on Centre in a couple of days.” Murray will now face big serving John Isner in the next round. Isner was famously part of tennis’ longest ever match when he took Nicholas Mahut to five sets at Wimbledon back in 2010 before eventually winning the final set 70-68 after 11 hours 5 minutes playtime over three days. “I played well against John in the past. I don’t think I’ve ever played him on grass before, so there will be different challenges,” Murray said. “He’s played well here before. Novak Djokovic overcomes Soonwoo Kwon test to begin Wimbledon defence
Back to Wimbledon but not exactly back to business for Novak Djokovic. There was a moment where it appeared the six-time Wimbledon champion had found an unlikely sanctuary after the events of the past 12 months but thanks to controlled aggression from the unheralded Soonwoo Kwon, Djokovic was faced with an afternoon that, like his year, was far from straightforward. There was a storm brewing on Centre Court as Kwon served out the second set, and that wasn’t just overhead as the rain pittered on the closed roof to the sound of thunder above the All England Club. The 24-year-old troubled Djokovic at times with a big serve, patience in the lengthy exchanges and an exquisite touch at the net that really should have been utilised more often. It gave Djokovic a brief scare but as Kwon’s accuracy waned the size of the task at hand for a player ranked 81 in the world became clear, as the top seed and favourite for the men’s title rattled out a 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 win. There’s another top quality schedule for Centre Court today. Fresh off her victory at the French Open, women’s world no. 1 Iga Swiatek gets her Wimbledon campaign underway against Croatia’s Jana Fett with this match kicking off Centre Court proceedings at 1:30pm. Following Swiatek out on court is men’s no. 2 seed Rafael Nadal who is halfway to a calender grand slam having already triumphed at the Australian and French Opens. He faces Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina. Finally, Serena Williams makes her return to the sport at 40-years-old and will take on France’s Harmony Tan. Wimbledon weather: Forecast for 2022 championships
Tennis fans planning on going to Wimbledon look set to contend with a mixed picture weather-wise with rain and sunny speels during the tournament. The famous tennis championship began on Monday with full-capacity crowds descending on the grand slam in southwest London for the first time in three years after the Covid pandemic. But play was quickly suspended due to rain on the opening morning and forecasters warned it was unlikely to be the last time. Tennis star Elina Svitolina on a mission to lift Ukraine’s fallen spirits
The 27-year-old former world No3 has taken a break from tennis to recover from injury as well as taking time to support her country following the Russian invasion. Svitolina has set up a foundation encouraging children to learn life lessons through tennis, and teamed up with UNITED24, an organisation set up by the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky – who recently named Svitolina a national ambassador – which raises funds for medical equipment, military defence and the rebuilding of the country’s battered infrastructure. “Of course, I’m still very, very sad about the situation that is happening right now and knowing how many people have lost their lives because of the invasion,” Svitolina told CNN Sport. “It makes me very sad. And that’s why I try to, you know, to focus a little bit on my foundation, on the UNITED24, just to have a mission that I can help in anyway.” She added: “It’s extremely tough because [my family] tell their stories. I speak with my grandmother every day to know how she feels. Wimbledon: Ball boy injured after collapsing helped by Jodie Burrage
Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage had no hesitation in handing out Percy Pig sweets to a ball boy who had fallen ill during her first-round defeat to Lesia Tsurenko at Wimbledon. The youngster looked unsteady on his feet early in the second set of her 6-2 6-3 loss and the 23-year-old Briton attended to him, offering an energy gel from her bag and a drink. But when they did not work, she turned to the classic British confectionery which was passed to her by a member of the crowd. They did the trick as the ball boy, who was led away in a wheelchair after lengthy treatment by paramedics, was later reported to be fully recovered.
