Jane da Mosto, head of a pressure group called We Are Here Venice, believes the number of tourists should be set at around 50,000 – the same as the number of residents. It is doubtful that the reservation system will make a difference to the problems of overtourism. “Having a ticketing system makes no sense unless there is an express limit on the number of visitors allowed in Venice at any one time. I don’t think that necessarily means that Venice is becoming like Disneyland. “When you buy tickets to the movies or to a theme park, they stop selling tickets when the number of people that can be accommodated safely and comfortably is reached. “The number of tourists should reflect the number of residents to give people a more authentic experience. I am concerned that a ticketing system will potentially make people’s behavior worse. People might think, “I’ve paid 10 euros to come here, but there are no bins, so I’ll throw my rubbish on the ground.” Green party councilor Gianfranco Bettin said: “The problem is that the influx of visitors is upsetting the demographic and socio-economic fabric of the city. “We have to find a way to limit the number of day-trippers and I think we need drastic measures, including a fixed number of visitors.”
