A man was killed after a serious clash on the Bernabeu-Vancouver border. An investigation is under way, which blocked traffic on Tuesday morning along Boundary Road, a busy suburban route. Police and firefighters from both Burnaby and Vancouver were called to Boundary Road near Canada Way at about 12:45 p.m. following reports of a fire in a vehicle as a result of a collision. Investigators say a black Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on Boundary Road when it was plowing a tree and caught fire. The driver was the only person inside. He was trapped in the vehicle and died on the spot. “We would like to thank the many witnesses who tried to save the driver and contacted the emergency services,” Cpl said. Alexa Hodgins of Burnaby RCMP. “We understand that this kind of event can be traumatic, but the actions of the witnesses are nothing short of heroic,” Hodgins said. The first to respond later placed a tarpaulin over the driver’s side of the deformed vehicle. Police say it is too early to say if speed or alcohol were a factor, however, the damage left behind appears to be evidence of a high-impact collision. The airbags were opened, the vehicle was almost unrecognizable and there were broken car parts all the way. The SUV stopped in the middle of the center, but the Burnaby RCMP criminal collision investigation team took over the investigation. Police ask anyone who saw the collision or may have video footage from Boundary Road between Grandview Highway and Kingsway Avenue between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. Boundary Road between Canada Way and 22nd Avenue is closed to both the north and south, and police are still investigating the collision. This is a story that is evolving and will be updated as more information becomes available.
