Onlookers can be heard shouting at the man “Wait!” as he kicks his feet high above the ground. At one point his hard hat falls off his head and onto the hard surface below. An onlooker can be heard saying: “Oh my god, how did that happen?” As he descends further, the witnesses begin to fear that the load will crush him and shout to the crane operator: “Stop!” The video does not show him reaching the bottom. However, site officials said the worker got off safely and was not seriously injured. The police, fire and ambulance services said they were not called, reports CBC television. Construction company PCL Constructors confirmed an “incident took place” on Tuesday when a worker’s hand “got entangled with a nail after hooking a load”. It added: “Luckily, he landed safely on the desktop and was not seriously injured.” The worker was employed by subcontractor Modern Niagara as a machinist, responsible for ensuring loads of materials were securely secured before they were lifted by crane operators. The Ontario Ministry of Labor is investigating and has sent an inspector downtown. He said: “It was reported that a worker became entangled with a ribbon from a crane after hooking a load, was lifted off the pedestal level and injured.” PCL said it is “cooperating with all relevant authorities” and that the investigation is ongoing. The construction site is the same one where a crane collapsed and fell onto the roof of an adjacent building 200 feet above. Four buildings were evacuated after the accident in July 2020, but no one was seriously injured. In the same month, another crane collapsed on a block of flats in East London, killing one and injuring four. And last September, a crane hire boss was crushed to death by a falling hot tub while being taken out in a garden in Bristol.
