When America built a large military base near home, he moved to a more remote neighborhood called Shinkay, where he was watched over by his former bodyguard, Jabbar Omari. Mr. Omar was arrested after the death of Mullah Omar. A former Afghan intelligence official who questioned Mr Omari said the detainee had told investigators the pair traveled from Kandahar to Kalat in a Toyota that had broken down en route, but had not disclosed where the car was. Mullah Omar is said to have had little contact with the outside world, only occasionally giving messages and recordings to a courier who took them to senior Taliban officials. Apparently he had little day-to-day involvement in the movement, but he remained a spiritual figure. The guerrilla movement continued to issue statements in his name until he finally admitted he was dead in 2015. At the time his death was revealed, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency said he died in Karachi.
