A 20-year-old woman was shot dead Wednesday night as she pushed her daughter into a stroller in New York’s Upper East Side, police said. The woman was near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 95th Street around 8:30 p.m. when she was shot, police said in a statement. She was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead, police said. The 3-month-old baby was not injured, police said, but was taken to hospital for a medical examination. City Council member Julie Menin, who represents the area, said on Twitter that the victim was the child’s mother. Her identity has not been disclosed pending family notice. “More guns in our city means more lives lost,” said Mayor Eric Adams during a news conference at the scene of the shooting. “It means more babies are crying, because those who love them are dead.” New York, like many other U.S. cities, has faced growing concern about violent crime, although New York City police statistics show that shootings have dropped by about 12 percent and homicides by 13 percent so far this year. compared to the same period last year. But the killings remain at the second highest level since 2012. No arrests have been made and an investigation is under way, police said.
