A Canada Day fireworks display is scheduled for this afternoon in St. John’s. However, the city of Corner Brook was forced to cancel its own after the specialist pyrotechnician hired to do it was unable to travel to the city due to a flight cancellation. Good evening guys. Bad news — our evening fireworks display 🎆🎆 has been cancelled. These are industrial fireworks that can only be used by qualified personnel and our technician could not reach the province. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. pic.twitter.com/w0gJWhpiFH — Corner Brook (@CornerBrook) July 1, 2022 The St. John’s event begins at Quidi Vidi Lake with a live concert in the bandstand at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. Meanwhile, this evening offers one of only two opportunities during the year when people are allowed to shoot off their own fireworks in St. John’s and in Corner Brook. Both cities have introduced new regulations on personal fireworks that prevent people from using them on days other than New Year’s Eve and Canada Day. The deputy mayor of St. John’s Sheilagh O’Leary says the bylaw was put in place to prevent residents from being disturbed by fireworks all year round and at all hours of the night. Canada Day Personal Fireworks in St. John’s are only allowed from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., “and that’s it,” O’Leary says. In Corner Brook, personal fireworks can only be set off between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
