Leahy, 82, fell at his home in McLean, Va. On Wednesday night, his office said.
Leahy’s emergency surgery means he may need to waste time in the Senate, which would limit what Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (DN.Y.) in the 50-50 Senate could have planned.
Any candidate not supported by Republicans should wait for Leahy to return to work unless there is also an absence from the GOP side of the aisle.
“Senator Leahy will undergo surgery this morning to repair a broken hip he suffered from a fall at his home in McLean, Virginia on Wednesday night,” Leahy’s office said in a statement.
The statement said that the lack of depth perception was a factor and that the senior senator is expected to make a full recovery.
“Having been born blind in one eye, the Senator had a lifelong battle with diminished depth. “He has gotten some remarkable dings over the years, but he finally caught up,” his office said.

The office said doctors decided the best course of action would be to undergo surgery to repair his broken hip as soon as possible.
Leahy, who is serving his eighth term in the Senate, announced in November that he would retire at the end of this year.
Only Vice President Harris and President Nancy Pelosi (California) precede Leahy in succession if President Biden is unable to perform his duties.
