Randy Beauchesne was at the Royal University Hospital on June 13 with Danya, who was seeking medical attention. Danya says Randy was in the cafeteria that night when a man came up behind him and ran a screwdriver through his skull, piercing his frontal lobe. Danya did not see the attack, but says the nurses informed her of what happened. Court documents do not confirm the gun, but show that Kevin Witchekan, 39, has been charged with attempted murder of Randy. Police also issued a statement on June 14 about the attack that took place inside the hospital. Randy, a 55-year-old who has twice survived cancer, is being treated in the ICU in critical but stable condition, according to his daughter. “I love him so much. I do not want to see this happen to anyone,” said Danya. “This is rather unexpected. It does not deserve to happen to anyone.”

“Possible case of incorrect identity”

Police told CBC News that investigators believed it was a “possible case of misidentification”, meaning that Randy was not the victim. Police did not share any further information as the matter is before the courts. Witchekan has been remanded in custody for bail on July 7. The Saskatchewan Health Authority says there is no information at this time to suggest that there are more safety concerns for visitors or patients to the RUH as it relates to the incident.

Randy was helping his daughter’s friend

Danya says Randy had moved away to help an old friend, who was also admitted to the hospital, pay for her parking. But he did not return. “I tried to call him. I tried to text him and he did not answer,” Danya recalls. Danya Beauchesne says she has been in shock since her father was attacked on June 13. (Yasmine Ghania / CBC) Randy has little to no emotion on his left side and the severity of the brain injury is still unclear, Danya says. He just had a feeding tube removed on Monday. Danya says he can barely speak and has a long recovery process. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Randy with medical expenses and future bills. “He has already gone through so much in his life,” Danya said. He really does not need to go through that either. “
