“The wreck is in excellent condition, except for a crack in the middle of the fuselage and a small part of the missing left wing,” the team said in a statement. “It is only partially submerged in the sand – the wings and tail are still rising above the seabed.” Heritage experts from Sicily said it was a valuable historical discovery. “Once again, cooperation between locals, fishermen, divers and maritime heritage experts has led to the discovery of an extraordinary shipwreck,” said Alberto Samona, Sicily’s cultural heritage official. The wreck, found at a depth of 85 meters, was initially thought to be a completely different aircraft – a RAF Bristol Beaufort.
