A pro-choice rally was held in front of Kelowna City Hall on Monday morning. A pro-choice rally was held Monday morning in Kelowna’s Stuart Park to demand laws protecting the right to abortion. The rally was also in solidarity with women in the United States after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which is expected to lead to abortion bans in many US states. Monday’s protest in Kelowna featured a handful of anti-abortion protesters, who mostly stayed on the fringes of the crowd. At one point, a pair of anti-abortion protesters walked through the crowd and chanted “our body, our choice” at them. Pro-choice protesters held signs that read “it could happen here” and “your politics don’t rule my body.” Abortion has been legal in Canada since 1988, when the Supreme Court struck down a law that criminalized it. Since then, the federal government has not passed legislation on the matter and has left it up to the provinces to provide as health care. This means that access to abortion varies across Canada. After the fall of Roe v. Wade in the US, some pro-choice advocates have renewed the push to improve abortion access in Canada.
