The pedestrian mall on Downtown St. John’s returned for the third summer in a row and brought with it an event not seen in the area in many decades. The city says there will be pop-up shows at the mall throughout the summer and will use some of the $105,000 in Come Home Year funding to put on four concerts outside the courthouse. Mayor Danny Breen says such concerts in front of the courthouse were shelved during the original iteration of the pedestrian mall in 1970, and will return to it this summer. St John’s Councilor Ophelia Ravencroft says weather permitting the concerts will be held on Saturdays throughout the summer. He says events will begin on July 16 and include acts such as Kellie Loder, the Kubasonics and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. The Concerts will take place on July 16 and 23 and August 13 and 27. Mayor Breen says in case of inclement weather the concerts will be postponed until Sunday.
