Ottawa police say they have distributed “several” tickets in some vehicles to a small escort that entered the city as authorities prepare for another series of “freedom” demonstrations on Canada Day.

In a tweet at about 3 p.m., Ottawa police said they “interacted with a small convoy of vehicles at Pinecrest and Hwy. 417 area. “Several tickets were issued for the traffic on the highway and the vehicles left the city.” No further details were given. A live stream posted on the Freedom Fighters Canada Facebook page around 2 p.m. showed police surrounding several vehicles on the side of the road near Ikea in western Ottawa. One car was painted with slogans and coated with Canadian flags, “Free Pat King” and “Love They Mother Truckers” signs and had a can on the hood and stuffed animals on the roof. Pat King is one of the organizers of the escort that occupied downtown Ottawa last winter. He is in prison awaiting trial. The cannon is probably a reference to protesters transporting cans of fuel to trucks that blocked the streets of Ottawa during the winter “Freedom Convoy”.

Live stream narrator Dacey Chris said the car escort had gathered at Ikea to meet others heading to a campsite in Renfrew. (Many of the “freedom” protesters live in a CMO campsite.) Police officers on motorcycles waited in the Ikea garage and stopped the vehicles before they could get on the Hwy. 417, he said. By the end of the eight-minute video, police were letting the vehicles go. Police tweet comes as authorities and residents are preparing for many scheduled protest events at the core of the city over the next two days and the return of festivities for Canada’s Day for the first time since 2019. Ottawa Deputy Chief of Police Steve Bell said earlier this week that several hundred thousand people were expected to celebrate in the city center on Friday, with “freedom” groups planning demonstrations on both June 30 and Canada Day.

Bell said that while legal and peaceful protests are the right of Canadian citizens, protesters around Canada Day will not be allowed to erect loudspeakers, structures or tents. He said Ottawa police would do everything possible to keep the city safe and no illegal activity would be tolerated. On Tuesday, Ottawa statute officials demanded that protesters remove the tables they had set up on Wellington Street near Metcalfe in front of Parliament. A protest picnic on Friday that was originally scheduled to take place on the lawn outside the Supreme Court was moved after a fence was erected around the property. The event is now scheduled to take place at Strathcona Park in Sandy Hill. However, a procession and dance party in the center of the center are still going on, which are scheduled for Friday afternoon, according to the protesters. There are only a few formal events for Canada Day on Parliament Hill, with big concerts and fireworks taking place at LeBreton Flats and nearby Zibi Square in Gatineau. with files by Jacquie Miller
