iPhone timelines over the years
While early models were typically revealed in the first half of the year, Apple has since switched to a steady schedule of announcing and releasing new iPhone models in September. Here’s a quick timeline of the last few years of iPhone releases:
iPhone 13: September 23, 2021 iPhone 12: October 23, 2020 iPhone 11: September 20, 2019 iPhone XS: September 21, 2018 iPhone X: November 3, 2017 iPhone 8: September 22, 2017 iPhone 7: September 16, 2016
As you can see, the iPhone release schedule has become relatively consistent, but with two notable exceptions. The iPhone 12 series was delayed by a month due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The iPhone X was announced in September, but did not launch until November. As you may remember, the iPhone X had an all-new design and was the first iPhone with Face ID.
New iPhone 14 release date
The iPhone 14 series is expected to bring camera upgrades, a redesign for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and more. For example, the Pro models are meant to have hole punching + a pill-shaped notch. The front camera is expected to be updated, a new purple color could be offered and there are rumors of an always-on display. This year, everything points to the iPhone 14 being on track for a September announcement and launch. This includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is the entire range of new iPhone models we can expect this year. If history is any indication, Apple generally holds its annual special event to announce new iPhone models on the first or second Tuesday of September. This year, it would be September 6 or September 13. Since Labor Day is September 5th in the United States, the most likely date for a keynote speech this year is September 13th. With all that said, we still can’t completely rule out the possibility of delays. As we’ve discussed many times, there are many issues affecting the supply chain right now, ranging from shortages to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, we’ve only seen one report indicating that the iPhone 14 is facing production delays. And even that report indicated that the delays were affecting the iPhone 14 Max and not the other three features. Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the iPhone 14 series is still on track for a September release and launch. He noted, however, that the iPhone 14 Max is “lagging” but the situation is “under control”. Apple, however, will always prioritize iPhone production over its other products. The iPhone is the company’s biggest product, brings in the most revenue, and is what investors on Wall Street care about the most. If there are further problems in the supply chain, we will likely see other products delayed before the iPhone 14 is delayed. Planning to upgrade to the iPhone 14 this year?
