An official ceremony is being held in Belgium today for the official rest of a young soldier from the New Earth who was in an insignificant tomb for a century. 17-year-old soldier John Lambert from St. John’s was killed in August 1917 and buried with a few British soldiers near St Julien in Belgium. Their remains were unearthed at an archeological excavation in April 2016 and, as luck would have it, a patch was found on the shoulder that clearly wrote NFLD among the remains. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Sarah Lockyer, Coordinator of the Canadian Armed Forces Victims Recognition Program, with the help of archival research conducted by The Rooms, has positively identified the remains of soldier Lambert. Members of the Lambert family are in Belgium for the ceremony.
