Sky Sports’s Craig Slater apologizes to Nelson Pique to Lewis Hamilton and explains how the Formula One mantra will react.
Nelson Pique “wholeheartedly” apologized to Lewis Hamilton, but “strongly condemns any suggestion” that he racistly abused his compatriot, the Formula 1 world champion, claiming that his comments had been mistranslated.
An interview with the Brazilian from last year appeared this week, in which he twice used a racist insulting expression when referring to Hamilton.
This led to widespread condemnation from the entire F1 paddock, with Hamilton himself calling for “action” and insisting that “archaic mentalities must change and have no place in our sport”.
On Wednesday, Pique issued his own statement saying he wanted to “clear up the stories”.
“What I said was misplaced and I do not defend it,” said Pique, a three-time F1 champion.
“But I will clarify that the term used is one that has been widely and historically used in colloquial Portuguese as a synonym for ‘type’ or ‘person’ and was never intended to offend.

“I would never use the word I have been accused of in some translations. I strongly condemn any suspicion that the word was used by me in order to underestimate a driver because of the color of his skin.
“I wholeheartedly apologize to anyone affected, including Lewis, who is an incredible guide, but the translation on some of the media now circulating on social media is not correct.
“Discrimination has no place in F1 or in society and I am happy to clarify my thoughts in this regard.”
Sky Sports News understands that Pique will not be allowed to return to the mantra after his comments, which were made last November when the crash between Hamilton and Max Ferstappen was discussed at the 2021 British GP.

In response, Hamilton sent a series of tweets. He said: “It’s more than just language. These archaic mentalities need to change and have no place in our sport. I was surrounded by these attitudes and I aimed for my whole life. . “
He also wrote on Twitter “Vamos focar em mudar a mentalidade”, which in Portuguese means “Let’s focus on changing the mentality”.
Pique is the father of Verstappen’s partner, Kelly Pique.
“Pique is not welcome in the F1 mantra”
Sky Sports News Craig Slater:
“I understand that Nelson Pique, despite his apology, will at least not be welcome in the Formula 1 mantra for the foreseeable future.
“I think that the remarks he made, the language he used in this interview since November last year, have been deeply recorded with those who are at the forefront of the sport.

“He has apologized, but I understand that this was beyond pale and that in the near future he will not be welcome back to the Formula 1 paddocks.”
F1 condemns Pique’s comments, drivers show support for Hamilton
Pique’s comments were strongly criticized by F1 and the FIA board, while drivers and teams also expressed support for Hamilton, the sport’s most successful driver and seven-time champion.
Hamilton teammate George Russell was the first to support Hamilton, posting on social media: “Huge respect for LH. He has done more for the sport than any driver in history, not just on and off the track.

“The fact that he and so many others still have to deal with this behavior is unacceptable. We must all stand together against discrimination of any kind.”
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc also criticized Piquet’s comments. Writing on Twitter, he said: “Knowing Lewis since I got to Formula 1, he has always been kind and respectful to me and everyone he meets. These values should be the standard for anyone around the world.
“Comments against Lewis should not be tolerated and we should continue to push for a more diverse and inclusive sport. We must remove discriminatory behavior and racist language in any form not only from our sport, but and from our society. “
McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo also showed his support for Hamilton by posting a message on Instagram saying: “Discrimination and racism have no place in this sport or in our society. Those who still choose to spread hatred and use it the words are not my friends.

“I want to acknowledge Lewis and all the work he has done both on and off the track to not only spread messages of equality but also to fight this hatred.
“I have never been involved in racist acts, but he did it all his life. However, each time his response to hatred is motivated by the maturity, positivity and education of the world on how we should act.
“I stand with him and I will do everything I can to follow and support him.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, who also took to Instagram to write: “All racist and discriminatory language has absolutely no role to play in our sport and in our society. That’s enough.
