Democrat Sean Casten will win his party’s candidacy for CNN projects in the 6th District of Illinois. Casten defeated another incumbent, MP Marie Newman. Casten has served two terms in Congress after overthrowing his Chicago suburb in 2018. The seat, created during last year’s redistribution process, suited both incumbents: Newman lives outside the new district, while Kasten lives in it. But most of Newman’s voters from the constituency he currently represents are in the new 6th District, while most of Casten’s current voters have been relocated to another constituency. Newman was in her first term, but is facing an investigation by the House Ethics Committee into allegations that she may have promised federal employment to a major challenger in exchange for their political support. Newman denied the allegations, saying the allegations were politically motivated. Newman was elected to Congress in 2020 when he ousted MP Dan Lipinski, one of the party’s most conservative members of parliament at the time. A pro-Israel group had campaigned against Newman, criticizing him for voting against $ 1 billion to fund Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense shield last year.
