Municipal workers with the City of Mount Pearl went on strike on Wednesday night. CUPE Local 2099 has been involved in a contract dispute with the employer for some time. The 200 employees provide services such as recreation, taxation, public works, engineering and design. Ken Turner, President of CUPE Local 2099, says one of the main issues is that the city wants to impose a two-tier system with inferior benefits for new hires. He says the same benefits should apply to all workers. Some services will be interrupted Mayor Dave Aker says summer camps will continue, but some services will be interrupted. He says they will do everything they can to ensure the rugby, soccer, softball and baseball fields are maintained. However, the community centers, Summit Center and Glacier will remain closed. Garbage collection will continue but only once every two weeks. Recycling is suspended. Residents will receive a flyer in the mail in the coming days outlining the schedules and services. Anyone with questions can call 748-1000.
