The victim of Wednesday’s collision at Pacific and Hornby streets has been identified as Agustin Beltrán, a Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia. A memorial of flowers and candles grows at the intersection after the accident. Dr. Patrick Francois, dean of UBC’s Vancouver School of Economics, issued a statement Thursday, calling Beltran’s tragic death a “tremendous loss” for the university community. “We are shocked and devastated by the death of Agustín,” Francois wrote. “We extend our deepest condolences to Agustín’s family, friends and peers. We share their grief today and in the days to come.” Counseling services are being provided to “any members of the community who are affected,” the director added. On Sunday, Beltrán is remembering with a group bike ride scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Vancouver Art Gallery. “Memorial walk, not protest. Family would like to see a large turnout,” wrote Twitter user Anthony Floyd. Meanwhile, Vancouver police are continuing to investigate the crash. Authorities said the driver is cooperating with their investigation and do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash. A damaged blue and black bicycle could be seen under the wheels of the dump truck after the accident. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash or dash cam video taken in the area around 7:30 a.m.
