The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. in the middle of a community housing complex in Ottawa, close to a park and community centre. The victim was taken to the Ottawa Hospital campus trauma unit, paramedics said. Police cruisers and caution tape surrounded the scene, not far from Ledbury Avenue. An alley between two residential blocks was also blocked off. A pool of blood could be seen on a path between the two buildings. Banff Avenue Community House, which provides essential services as well as programs for children and youth in the Ottawa Community Housing project, is located directly across the street. Several people in the neighborhood told CBC they heard multiple gunshots. Charles Pereira, who lives nearby, said he was just getting off the phone when he heard “some gunshots.” He saw police cars pull up and got out to see what was going on. “I noticed a gentleman lying on the pavement as if bleeding, and [first responders] they were trying to… resurrect him,” he said. “This is not the first time this has happened. They bring them here every now and then, the shootings,” Pereira said, though he added that this was the first time he had seen the aftermath of a daytime shooting. Coun. Riley Brockington, who represents the district, posted on social media Tuesday that he was “very saddened” to hear about the shooting.
