West Midlands Fire Service said a search and rescue operation was ongoing. West Midlands Police said: “We are currently at the scene of a serious incident at Babbs Mill Park, Fordbridge Road, Kinghurst, Solihull. “Several people have been pulled from a lake and are being taken to hospital. They are believed to be in a critical condition.” A witness told Sky News: “I saw firefighters on the lake breaking up the ice.” He said he saw several people in danger, including three receiving medical attention. Babbs Mill Park is a local nature reserve, with a lake and woodlands. People “playing on ice” West Midlands Fire Service said it was called at 2.36pm along with West Midlands Ambulance Service and the police. The fire service said: “Reports from the scene and videos on social media show that people were playing on the ice in a pond and fell in. “Our specialist water rescue crews arrived and acted vigorously to take control of the scene and carry out rescues using specialist equipment and entering the water. “The victims have been treated at the scene by both firefighters and ambulance personnel before being taken to nearby hospitals.”
