The 104.9 FM station, owned by Rogers Sports and Media, started playing the rap metal song Killing in the Name in the morning and did not stop early in the afternoon. When a listener called with a request for a different song, a DJ ignored it and stuck to a song playlist. This comes a day after popular morning hosts Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu announced their departure from the station after more than five years. Afternoon presenter Tara Jean Stevens also said she would move on to a new opportunity soon. “KiSS is changing and, unfortunately, we have been informed that we will not be part of this new chapter,” Lim and Sidhu said in their latest show on Tuesday and in a message posted on social media. They expressed their gratitude to the listeners and their management team at the station. Early Wednesday, some people speculated that the choice of music – a song of protest against the abuse of power released in 1992, a year after Rodney King was beaten by Los Angeles police – was made by unscrupulous officials. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello retweeted a local fan’s suggestion that it may be related to staff changes. But it could also be a ploy to signal a change in form. Sources said that in addition to the DJs who announced their departure from the station on Tuesday, other employees were left. New staff members were also found around the control room at the offices of Ash Street Station in Vancouver.

The station would also be unlikely to be operated by unscrupulous employees, as modern radio stations can operate remotely from the company’s headquarters, as in early 2021, when Bell Media executives in Toronto took control of the TSN 1040. shortly before announcing the Vancouver station staff was fired. The debate over the local radio industry has also suggested that the station be renamed Sonic, similar to Rogers’s Edmonton-owned FM station, which plays a modern rock band. In 1992, a station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin played REM’s It’s the End of the World for an entire weekend as a harbinger of the station’s transition to hard rock. Postmedia contacted Rogers Sports and Media about the future of the station and the selection of the song on loop. In an email response, a spokeswoman revealed a few details, saying only that “we will have more details to share with you tomorrow morning about the plans for 104.9 FM in Vancouver”. – with archives by Patrick Johnston [email protected] twitter.com/cherylchan More news, fewer ads: Our in-depth journalism is possible thanks to the support of our subscribers.
