With Canada Day celebrations back in full swing after a two-year pandemic break, the Kelowna Fire Department is reminding residents that it remains illegal to fire fireworks without permission. And, licenses can only be obtained from licensed professionals. “Illegal use of fireworks poses a safety hazard and can cause stress to both humans and animals,” said Kyle Jacobson, fire and life safety instructor at Kelowna Fire Department. “Instead of risking injury and fines, we urge residents to attend a professional fireworks display. “Glowsticks are also a safe and fun alternative for children.” Festivals Kelowna is once again hosting Canada Day celebrations throughout downtown all day on Friday culminating in a large fireworks display over Lake Okanagan in front of the Waterfront Park starting at 10 p.m. Jacobson says more than 10,000 people are injured each year in Canada and the United States by fireworks accidents. Fines of up to $ 500 per incident can be imposed for illegal use.
