The jurors heard the dying cries of a daughter who was crushed to death after she was overthrown and led by her father, as a murder trial began. Nigel Malt, 44, of Lynn Road, King’s Lynn, was tried in Norwich Crown Court for denying the murder of Lauren Malt’s daughter. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead on January 23 of this year, after the crash of Malt’s Mercedes car in Leete Way, West Winch, just before 19:30. Andrew Jackson, who opened the case on Thursday (June 30th), told jurors: “What you heard there was the sound of what the prosecution says was no less than murder.” He said Nigel Malt “reversed his car and knocked down his daughter”. Jackson said: “After hitting her on the ground, he then drove his car over her. “She stopped and then drove the car over her body.” Lauren Malt is “essentially crushed to death” during the incident, which Jackson said happened after Malt threatened his daughter’s friend, Arthur Marmel, with a crowbar. Jackson said Malt “used his car as a lethal weapon.” He added: “A car when driving at speed when driving over another person will inevitably cause death or really serious damage. “This is simple common sense.” Leete Way, West Winch where Lauren Malt died after being raped – Credit: Archant 2022 The court heard Malt was “alienated” from his family at the time of the incident, including his wife Karen and Lauren’s daughter. Jackson said his relationship with his wife was “marked by alcohol, drugs, anger and threats of violence from the accused.” After splitting. Malt’s wife, Karen, Lauren’s daughter, and her other siblings lived together at her grandmother’s house in Little Way. In the spring of 2021, Malt had twice attacked his wife, resulting in her being arrested and released on bail on the condition that she not contact or visit his wife, who worked in a West Winch store. Jackson said that by January 23 of this year, the accused’s relationship with his family had “broken” but “it was something he was not willing to accept.” Malt had gone to Little Way to call for his daughter, but she would not let him in. Between 6.25 and 18.52 he tried to call his daughter 19 times, but all calls went unanswered. He tried three more times to call his daughter and at 19.14 she answered. After a call that lasted just over a minute, the defendant drove to Leete Way. He arrived at 19.21 and, armed with a crowbar, started arguing with Lauren and her boyfriend. Lauren had gone behind the car “as if she wanted to stop the accused from returning to pick up Arthur”. The car then drove backwards in speed to Lauren before being driven forward over it. Mr Jackson said it was a deliberate act intended to cause maximum damage. The court then heard Malt pick up his unconscious daughter, whose broken breast, ribs and spine were broken, and put her in the passenger seat of his car. A member of the public said “I do not believe it, you killed her” and said “do not take the police, do not take the police”. He then took her to his wife at the convenience store before transporting her to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Malt was arrested and interviewed about his daughter’s death. At first it was to say that Lauren’s friend had come out aggressively. He said he had heard Lauren but had not seen her, but heard a “knock” after reversing. Malt said he then saw Lauren and drove her to the hospital as the ambulance would need more. In a later interview, Malt said he thought he had hit a bucket of wheels. But Mr Jackson, who insisted he would see him if there was a bucket on the street, said: “There is no doubt that the accused caused Lauren to die. “You can be sure with the evidence that using his car as a weapon, he turned his back on her in order to kill her or cause her really serious harm. “After he did, he ran her again with the same intention.” Following the opening of the case, two of the 14 jurors withdrew, with the trial continuing with a jury of six men and six women. The trial continues.
The father denies the murder
Jurors were also told that Malt says he accidentally killed his teenage daughter. The 44-year-old pleaded not guilty to the murder of Lauren’s daughter in Leete Way, West Winch on January 23 this year. At the end of the prosecution on Thursday (June 30), Allison Summers QC told jurors that there was no doubt that her client had killed the 19-year-old and that when he did, he was under the influence of alcohol. He said he was angry with Lauren’s boyfriend, but insisted that what happened to his daughter was an “accident”. He said he was “undoubtedly caused by a very bad ride” while under the influence of alcohol. But she said Malt was so driven by his anger at her boyfriend and so “bent down” to have the last word with him that he failed to do the proper checks when he reversed quickly.
