Georgetown University law professor Rosa Brooks blamed the mass killing in Highland Park on Americans who are “enslaved” to the Constitution, “written more than 230 years ago by a small group of white slaves,” on Tuesday. At a Fourth of July parade in Illinois, a gunman shot and killed at least seven people and injured dozens more. The suspect is now in custody, although authorities have not yet released a motive. MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” host Joy Reid spoke to a panel that mourned the lives lost but called for stricter gun control laws as a result. And whatever mental issues the shooter here had, and it’s clear he did, still and if he did, he didn’t need that gun,” said MSNBC legal analyst Jill Wine-Banks. We can’t say, oh, it’s the Russians’ fault, they shouldn’t have invaded us. Or oh, this is Al Qaeda. This is 100% us and it’s because we’re essentially slaves to a document written more than 230 years ago by a tiny group of white slaves,” Brooks said. Several liberals have invoked the Supreme Court’s decision since it was announced in June, with many hosts and guests suggesting that guns have more rights than women. Brooks added, “And we can’t get out of the slavery we’ve imposed on ourselves of feeling like we have to — everything from the Supreme Court is decided in relation to this ancient document that just doesn’t serve us well. Later in the segment, Brooks agreed with Reid that a major issue in the country is the ease with which someone can obtain AR-15 weapons. You talk to military veterans, you talk to police officers, and they will all say that these are essentially weapons of war.
