Sony And just like that, all the drama was over. PlayStation has just announced that God of War Ragnarok will indeed hit its promised 2022 release window and will be released in the very traditional “big game” slot in early November. Specifically, November 9, 2022. The news also comes with a new “CG” trailer for the game called “Father and Son”, which is only 30 seconds long, but I guess they wanted to release something else along with this news: In it, we can hear the voice of an older Atreus, no longer a child, and more of a teenager, it seems. Father and son fight the enemies and end up squaring off against a giant wolf, which I assume is the Fenrir of Norse mythology. Fenrir was the son of Loki and Angerboda, which is weird considering Atreus is Loki, and we know that Angerboda is introduced in this game and seems to be around Atreus’ age… Who knows what weird twists will happen we have about traditional mythology with this continuity. The God of War Ragnarok release date turned into a mini-controversy after virtually nothing had been said or revealed about the game since September 2021, and everyone thought we could be headed for a delay. A recent leak said that Sony planned to reveal the date about a week ago, but that didn’t happen, and Sony Santa Monica’s Cory Balrog tweeted that if it were up to him, he would share more, implying that Sony wanted to some reason is waiting. This escalated into actual harassment of the Santa Monica developers on the release date, including one woman who said she had been sent photos of the harassment as part of the harassment campaign to extract a date, prompting the studio to issue a statement chastising the angriest parts of his fanbase: Exactly why this all escalated to this point is unclear, but the very simple version of the story is… Sony was supposed to reveal the date last week, they decided to wait a week for some reason. That’s pretty much it, it seems, and unlike Xbox’s Starfield, which was delayed to 2023, PlayStation will actually have a big holiday hit this year, and it looks like Elden Ring could have some GOTY competition in 2022. Then again, there’s still a lot about Ragnarok that we don’t know, and we haven’t seen that much of the game yet, at this point. But honestly, I’m fine with them not giving away much more than we already know. It’s not like it needs anything else to sell itself at this point, as if you played the first game (as millions did) you’ll no doubt want to play the sequel. We’ll see if Sony does a bigger reveal on the game later or if they just leave the rest a mystery. Now we have the date, and that was really the only major outstanding question.
