Drummond had a nearly 6,000-vote lead over O’Connor in the near-full election results late Tuesday. Last July, Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Tulsa attorney O’Connor to serve the remainder of Mike Hunter’s tenure as attorney general following Hunter’s resignation. “I was a candidate against the governor and his appointee,” Drummond said at his clock party in Tulsa. “I think what tonight’s vote shows is that the majority of people want transparency and accountability. “They want honesty and integrity.” People said they were tired of the scandal and corruption, Drummond said. O’Connor campaigned for a reversal of President Joe Biden’s policies and an end to abortion. Former President Donald Trump had nominated O’Connor for the federal seat, a position he did not take after the American Bar Association said he was unqualified.

“I am honored to continue serving for a few months and then there will be a very smooth transition,” O’Connor said late Tuesday. “. I want to thank the governor who appointed me and who gave me the opportunity to serve in this way during these months at a very critical time in the history of our state.” Hunter narrowly beat Drummond with 271 votes in the second round of 2018. “For a guy who lost 2018 with 271 votes, guys, this is a landslide,” Drummond told the crowd at his watch party. Drummond campaigned to be independent of Stitt and to improve the state’s relationship with the tribes in the wake of the US Supreme Court ruling McGirth. It also wants to close down illegal medical marijuana growing businesses. Drummond accused O’Connor of being left behind in many scandals in the state, refusing to get involved. Drummond is a graduate of Hominy High School. He holds a degree in agricultural economics from Oklahoma State University and a law degree from Georgetown University. He is a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who completed 40 combat missions during Desert Shield and Storm. He is also a bank owner and rancher. No Democrats have applied for the seat. Drummond will face Lynda Steele, a Liberal from Warr Acres, on the Nov. 8 ballot.
