In a segment of FS1’s First Things First on July 4, while discussing Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant for a possible move to the Raptors, Broussard had a lot to say about the city, claiming he doesn’t think Durant will want to go to Toronto .
“I’ve visited many times. Obviously, I was there covering the league. Big city, but […] You know, it’s not America, and you feel it when you’re there. I’m telling you, especially as an African American. It’s a different situation than African-Americans are used to,” Broussard said.
“I’ve talked to people in this organization, before Ujiri, about, ‘Can they keep African-American superstars here?'”
Broussard clarified his message in a tweet later that night, writing, “I never said black people are treated worse in Toronto than America. Never! That’s ridiculous. I said living there is different and it’s not the same as living in America for Blacks.’ Very different city. But only 8% black. I love visiting Toronto. Visit.”
Former Raptor Rondae Hollis-Jefferson responded to an excerpt of Broussard’s comments on Twitter, “Yeah, it’s hard… Canadians love you like you grow up there… tripping.”
NBA veteran and former Raptor Darrick Martin also joined Broussard’s hot offense in Toronto.
“They spoke like [uninformed] person he is. I played for both the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors and my experience in those cities was amazing. I wouldn’t mind being in any of those cities for my entire 13 year NBA career,” Martin’s tweet reads.
