The Codiac Regional RCMP heard from “many people in recent weeks”, including alleged victims and witnesses, “who shared information about alleged incidents”, Sgt. Mathieu Roy, of the General Investigation Department, said in a press release on Monday. “Based on the information that has been revealed to us, we have reason to believe that there may be other victims or witnesses who could assist in our investigation.” The investigation began last August, when the Codiac Regional RCMP received a complaint of alleged sexual assault involving a male teacher at École Champlain Elementary School in Moncton in 1987 and 1988. Following an investigation, a 75-year-old man was arrested in January 2022 in connection with the complaint. On April 4, Paul J. Maillet, of Notre-Dame, was charged in Moncton District Court with inciting sexual assault, sexual assault and acts of gross indecency. He was released on parole pending a future court date. There is a publication ban imposed by the court on any information that could possibly identify the alleged victim. In May, the RCMP issued a press release looking for other alleged victims. The investigation is ongoing, Roy said Monday. Police are still investigating activists and gathering information. Anyone with information that could help with the research is kindly requested to call the Codiac Regional RCMP at 506-857-2400. “Please know that you can come to us and you will be treated with compassion, care and discretion by trained and experienced researchers,” Roy said. “You are not alone. We are here to support you.” A complaint of sexual offenses can be made at any time, regardless of how far back the incident was, the news bulletin said. Survivors of sexual assault or harassment or individuals with information that could assist in an ongoing sexual offense investigation can call the RCMP at 1-888-506-RCMP (7267).
