Saanich Chief Const. Dean Duthie said Wednesday that an RCMP explosive ordnance disposal unit managed to move the devices from the vehicle to a local landfill and destroy them. Police had evacuated the area shortly after the shooting on Tuesday, as the explosives unit was called. Six police officers were shot and two suspects were killed in a clash with police on Tuesday. Duthy said three of the officers remain in the hospital, including one in the intensive care unit, while another officer will need further surgery. He had spoken to one of the officers at the hospital and said the police station would be there to support him. “We are here for his family… just to let him know that the police community is 100 percent behind him.”

The chief said police were still investigating the possibility of a third suspect, although they did not believe there was any danger to the public. He said the police were acting with vague information. “Our goal was to keep the public safe,” he told police, who ordered residents near the bank to stay inside on Tuesday. Police said in a statement that they were unable to confirm the identities, backgrounds or motives of the suspects. Work is underway to confirm the names of the suspects. Duthie looked at many of the videos of the incident and said it was a miracle that no one else was killed. “It is astonishing that no other citizen or member of the public was injured,” he said, referring to the swift action of the officers who responded.

“Both the Greater Victoria Patrol officers and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Officers (put themselves) in danger of bringing it to a successful and safe conclusion as soon as possible.” General view of the place where two armed suspects lost their lives and six police officers were shot, during an incident at a bank in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, on June 28, 2022 in this image taken by social media. Shelli Fryer, 59, of Langford, said she looked out the door and a few feet away was “a man in full attack gear holding a rifle. Fryer said the masked man was wearing black, had a bulletproof vest over his jacket and was holding a black rifle that was shorter and shorter than he was used to seeing in the media. “The energy from them was completely calm,” he said. He heard a gunman say quietly to the manager, “Vault,” and the manager gave him the keys and they both left the office, he said.

Fryer said the other suspect was walking on the floor, just walking back and forth from the office, “as if he were going for a walk in the park, just walking as if expecting something.” The robbers put all 22 people at the bank against a wall in a back hallway and waited for an eternity, he said. “We did not hear anything at all about what was happening outside. We could not hear sirens. “ He heard in a loud voice, “Police!” and then a hail of shots, and everyone ran to hide. Fryer said that each of the police officers involved in the “absolutely insane incident” handled themselves professionally and then treated those at the bank with courtesy and concern. Violent, bank robberies are rare in Canada, said Robert Gordon, a professor of criminology at Simon Fraser University. Gordon said the suspects may have targeted the bank based on information about an unusual or large amount of cash on the premises, possibly Brink’s delivery or cash pay. “Maybe they had some inside knowledge of a mission of some kind that was in that bank. “There must have been something in that bank that they thought was worth grabbing,” Gordon said. Although in 2013 sociologist Frederick Desroches predicted the end of bank robberies, thanks to the growing transition to a cashless society, improved surveillance and better policing, robberies still occur in cases where criminals know in advance a large “Target” in the bank.

“The flow of cash flow information is a challenge for any security agency,” Gordon said. “We still receive these overnight robberies where there is a goal in the bank that is worth having, where they will spend a lot of time planning it, breaking into the vault or the powerful room. “These are unusual cases, but they happen.” Such operations require careful planning and will normally be performed by “skilled or trained” teams. Gordon said those responsible for Sanic’s robbery looked like “amateurs”. “The days of masked robbers rushing to the bank and wielding pistols are long gone,” Gordon said. “Banks no longer hold large amounts of cash. “Security in the banks is much more difficult than it used to be – there are panic buttons, CCTV and other sophisticated methods of trapping and trapping people in the banks.”

“Low reward” robberies, on the other hand, are not uncommon, with bank robbers targeting cashiers for the small amounts of cash they keep in drawers. Banks usually advise cashiers not to resist and hand over cash when asked.
