Incumbent Danny Davis will beat China Collins to win the Democratic nomination in the 7th Congressional District in Illinois, CNN reports. Davis is seeking a 14th term and there is no Republican candidate for the seat. As crime becomes a growing issue in the run-up to the interim presidency, District 7 has become a focal point in the Chicago area. According to the Chicago City Violence Reduction Schedule, two of the four “summer safety zones” the city has identified for additional proximity are within its borders, including the Austin and West Garfield Park areas. A number of municipal services are devoting resources to “summer safety zones” to respond to high levels of violence. During the campaign, Collins, a community activist, tried to show her close ties to the city by criticizing Davis for the lack of votes in the Capitol. For his part, Davis dismissed the question about the vote – saying he had never lost a major one in a long career, where, according to his estimate, he gave more than 15,000 of them. According to GovTrack, Davis, who has served in Congress since 1997, lost 1,012 of the 16,410 registered votes, or 6.2%. Read more about the candidates here. CNN’s Gregory Krieg and Eva McKend contributed to the report in this post.
