“I heard a loud car this morning and then a couple pops and that woke me up,” Hazeldean resident Will Mages said. “I heard those two bangs,” added another resident Blaire Charbonneau. “I was waiting and listening to see if I could hear anything after.” But Charbonneau didn’t, because the loud bangs weren’t fireworks but gunshots.

Mike Corpuz, who also lives in the neighborhood, said he saw what happened just after 6 a.m. on his doorbell camera. Story continues below ad “There was a scuffle, a red truck that was parked across the street made a U-turn to head west and then someone got out of (the house next door),” Corpuz said. “After that, I heard two shots,” Corpuz said. “I got out of bed, grabbed my daughters and went downstairs. I noticed that the window was broken and the bullets entered my daughter’s room.” Corpuz said a stray bullet entered a glass bedroom window and another through the front door, luckily missing him, his wife and three daughters. “I was freaking out. First of all, I said, “Are my kids okay, are they all okay?” Okay now let’s go, get down, we can’t stay up here, we have to go call the police,” Corpuz said of his thought process during the incident. Neighbors watched as EPS Tactical arrived at the home next to Corpuz. “Just hearing on the loudspeaker, the swat guys (saying), ‘Get out of your house, put down your guns if you’re armed, put down your guns or we’re coming in there,’” Charbonneau said. Police said no one was injured and there is no longer any danger to the general public. Story continues below ad But that’s little comfort to Corpuz and his neighbors, who want more to be done to make sure something like this never happens in their neighborhood again. “I couldn’t even imagine what we would do if shots were coming through our girl’s room, I couldn’t imagine what it would be like right now,” Charbonneau said. “We just got shot, my kid just got shot,” Corpuz said.
