United’s international players were due to return to Carrington on Monday but Ronaldo was absent, citing “family reasons”. It is currently unclear when the Portugal international will return, with United departing on Friday for their tour of Thailand and Australia. Athletic reported at the weekend that Ronaldo, 37, would like to leave if United receive a suitable offer this window. Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss his situation and the idea of a move to Chelsea. Bayern Munich have reportedly been informed of his situation, while Napoli appear to be interested. It is understood that the view from United is that Ronaldo is not for sale this summer. Ronaldo has 12 months left on the contract he signed when he returned to United last summer from Juventus. There is also an option on his contract for another year. He scored 24 goals in all competitions last season, finishing as United’s top scorer, but failed to help them qualify for the Champions League. A lack of Champions League football next season and a determination to compete for trophies is believed to be part of the reasoning behind his desire to leave. Ronaldo was reportedly concerned about the lack of progress on and off the pitch, while a clause in the contracts of all United players stipulates a 25 per cent pay cut as a general rule for missing out on Europe’s top club competition. Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, is hoping to add to his ranks. Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia is completing the final stages of his medical, while The Athletic revealed on Monday that Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to join the club.
