A couple camping at Evely Campground on the northwest side of Okanagan Lake barely made it through a burning kitchen in the fire that broke out early Wednesday. Tiffany Pare and her partner Michael lived in their trailer at the BC Parks Recreation Area. Tiffany’s father, Daniel Pare, says she suffered first and second degree burns trying to get her pets out of the house. “Unfortunately, their dogs and cat didn’t make it,” says her father. “They ended up standing outside, injured, almost naked, watching their animals burn alive – and all their possessions go up in smoke.” “Michael and I are physically fine,” Tiffany says on her Facebook page. “I have most of the burns from desperately trying to save Loki, Asa, and the cat, Jackson. “I woke up at 2am, I don’t know why I did it. I just did. I got up to put out a light (no light was on…it was a fire) and I discovered smoke coming into the kitchen window from outside. “I looked over and one of our chairs accidentally caught fire and the side of the RV went up in flames.” He says the couple slept for more than two hours and had no fire Tuesday night. He believes the fire is suspicious and says that seconds after he woke Michael up, the trailer went up in flames. “Had we stayed a little longer, our burns would have been worse, if not fatal.” They ran, fearing the trailer’s propane tanks would explode. The couple have been released from the hospital and are staying at a friend’s house, Daniel says, “with no idea how to put their lives back together.” He travels from Florida to be with them and help. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the couple. “Tiffany broke an arm trying to break a window to get the pets out. Naked and scared, they were given clothes by other campers. They lost everything. Their vehicles burned, no phones, no ID, nothing,” the organizer said Eric Clark. As of Thursday afternoon, the campaign had raised $4,780 toward its $10,000 goal.
