Eric Granger confirmed in an email Monday night that further details are awaited, but the arrest appears to be related to Leach’s bail terms.
He could not confirm the location of the arrest, but another lawyer who has also represented Lich, Keith Wilson, said on Twitter that the arrest took place Monday at Alta Medicine Hat, where Lich lives.
A judge initially denied Lich bail after her arrest during a mass demonstration that plagued central Ottawa for more than three weeks in February, but was released in March following a review of the ruling.
Leach and fellow protest organizer Chris Barber are jointly charged with malice, obstructing police, advising others to commit malice and intimidation.
He was released on a long list of conditions, including a ban on all social media and an order not to “support anything related to the Freedom Escort”.
“We do not know anything that could have caused this and we are surprised by this development, given the recent Ontario bail review hearing, where Ms Lich’s positive record of complying with her terms was one reason for “Some of her conditions were relaxed at the time,” Granger wrote in an email to the Canadian press.
Medicine Hat police did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation as to whether Lich had been arrested there.
In May, an Ontario judge ruled that Lich could remain on bail until her trial after a Crown prosecutor claimed she had violated one of her terms of release by agreeing to accept a leadership award during of the demonstration in Ottawa and had to return behind bars. to wait for her appearance in court.
Ontario Supreme Court Justice Kevin Phillips said he made the decision because Leach had complied with her terms of release, her guarantor was watching her well and already had a “prison taste”, which he said reduced the risk of repeated.
Phillips modified its conditions of release to allow it to visit Ottawa, but not the core of the city center. He upheld Lich’s ban on access to social media, saying that banning that access was still justified.
