Cities in eastern China faced new sets of restrictions, including closed supermarkets, no private meals and canceled flights, threatening the country’s economic recovery. Wuxi, an industrial city near Shanghai in eastern China, shut down many public places – including shops and supermarkets – and suspended food services after reporting 42 new asymptomatic cases on Saturday. Residents are also advised to work from home and not travel out of town unless absolutely necessary. Si, a county of 760,000 people in Anhui province, went into lockdown and suspended public traffic as it reported 288 new cases on Saturday. The city had recorded three new cases of COVID last week. Mainland China faced 473 new cases, of which 104 were symptomatic, the country’s National Health Commission announced on Sunday. On Saturday, 268 new cases were recorded, with 72 of the patients showing symptoms. Shanghai, China’s biggest financial hub, reported one positive case outside quarantine areas between midnight and 5pm on Sunday, officials said.
