Spacecraft operations are conducted by the Advanced Space and Terran Orbital teams in conjunction with NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN). Advanced Space currently navigates the spacecraft – a combination of determining the spacecraft’s trajectory and planning the maneuvers it will take to drive the spacecraft to the Moon.
“We are proud to lead CAPSTONE and the collaboration it represents with NASA and our industry partners,” said Bradley Cheetham, CEO of Advanced Space and CAPSTONE’s principal investigator. “The Advanced Space team’s work informs Gateway and future technology maturation efforts. Our team leverages these uniquely proven capabilities and lessons learned to rapidly and effectively support other programs and priorities in lunar space and throughout the Solar System,” Cheetham added.
CAPSTONE will use a highly efficient Ballistic Lunar Transport (BLT), which harnesses the Sun’s gravity to transport to the Moon instead of fuel. It will take four months to reach the target orbit on the Moon, an NRHO.
“We’ve studied BLTs and innovative navigation technologies for over a decade. Now we’re watching how these advances have allowed a small spacecraft to advance space exploration. It’s so exciting to see all the hard work pay off,” said Dr. Jeffrey Parker, co-founder of Advanced Space, chief technology officer. “We are ready to pave the way for NASA’s Gateway and open new doors for future space exploration,” added Parker.
