From fireworks to parades and concerts, there should be plenty of options for those who want to celebrate Canada’s 155th birthday.
And if you head to the cottage for the big weekend, you can expect some of the lowest gas prices since May.
Here’s what you need to know.
Weather
It will be hotter with Environment Canada forecasting higher temperatures of 30 C during the day, although humidex will make it feel like it is 35. The Meteorological Service says Toronto should have a combination of sun and clouds for Most of Canada Day with a 30 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon.
What is open and closed?
Most tourist attractions will be open, as will many shopping malls, including the Eaton Center. But the market of Agios Lavrentios will be closed, along with the vast majority of grocery stores. Here is the complete list.
Road closure
There will be several closed roads to host Canada Day events, including a section of Yonge Street near Mel Lastman Square. Cosburn Avenue will also be closed from Greenwood to Woodbine Avenue from 8 p.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Friday due to the parade for East York Day in Canada. Here is the complete list of closures.
Fireworks
There are dozens of fireworks displays scheduled throughout the GTA. In Toronto, all the popular fireworks at Ashbridges Bay Park, near Woodbine Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard, will start at 22:00 on Friday. But the city has also organized fireworks exhibitions for North York Downsview Park, Mel Lastman Square and Milliken Park in Scarborough, which will also start at 10 p.m.
Police, meanwhile, are vowing to have extra resources leading to fireworks displays across the city as they seek to avoid a repeat of the violence that took place at Woodbine Beach over the Victorian Day weekend.
The city will also have a number of cameras mounted in parks and additional law enforcement officers.
“I can tell you that the police have learned from this kind of experience,” Mayor John Tori said of the Victorian Day weekend weekend during an interview with CP24 this week. “They will launch their own plan to ensure that people are kept safe. “I think the leader certainly has my full support to ensure that anyone involved in this kind of act is brought to justice and treated because it is simply not something that is acceptable in a city like this or anywhere.”
Events
The annual East York Canada Day parade will begin at Dieppe Park at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, before heading east along Cosburn Avenue to Woodbine Avenue before finishing at Stan Wadlow Park. The celebration will then continue in the park from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., culminating in fireworks.
The city’s main celebrations for Canada Day are scheduled for both Mel Lastman Square in North York and Thompson Memorial Park in Scarborough. Festive events at Mel Lastman Square last from 2pm to 10pm and will include live music, dance performances, family-friendly activities and food vendors. The celebration at Thomson Memorial Park runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Activities include a pancake breakfast, a DJ soundtrack, castles and face painting. Here are all the details.
Free things to do
The Fort York Historic Site and Scarborough Museum will be open on Canada Day from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. General admission is free after the city decides to switch to an entry-free model for all 10 historic museums in May.
Riverdale Farm will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. while the High Park Zoo will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The city’s StrollTO program offers free self-guided hiking trails in more than 140 neighborhoods throughout the city. The city says each route will highlight points of interest that are “culturally and historically significant, with a focus on indigenous groups that build sites and deserve equality.” The itineraries are accessible through this link.
All 55 of the city’s outdoor pools officially kicked off their summer program on Thursday and will be open on Canada Day. Lifeguard supervision will also be available on the city’s beaches from 10:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Public transport
TTC will operate on a Canada Day holiday program, while GO Transit will follow Saturday’s schedule. TTC, however, will increase services to 22 Coxwell Routes, 92 Woodbine South and 501 Queen to accommodate travelers to and from Ashbridges Bay Park for Canada Day Fireworks display. On Friday morning, passengers on the East End should be aware that buses 70 O’Connor, 87 Cosburn, 91 Woodbine and 93 Parkview Hills will be diverted between 8am. and 11:30 a.m. to host the East Canada Day parade.
