Griner’s wife, Sherrell, told “CBS Mornings” that when she read the letter, she felt the fear Griner was experiencing.
“She’s probably the strongest person I know, so she doesn’t say things like that incessantly. That means she’s really terrified that she might never see us again. You know, I share the same feelings,” Cherelle said.
Cherelle, who only recently spoke to her wife through letters, said she feels Griner decided to write directly to President Joe Biden because the family has had no luck contacting him.
“She kills me every time, you know, when I have to write to her and she’s like, ‘Have you met them yet?’ And I have to say no… I’m sure I’m going to “write to him and ask now because my family tried to no avail, so I’m going to do it myself,” Cherelle said. .
Even after yesterday’s letter was delivered, Sherrell said she has not heard from Biden directly and said that is “very disappointing.”
Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in February after officials in Russia claimed she had cannabis oil in her luggage. A Russian judge has ordered Griner, the Phoenix Mercury center who played in Russia during the WNBA offseason, to remain in custody. If convicted of the drug-trafficking charges, Griner faces up to 10 years in a Russian prison. Her trial will continue on July 7.
Cherelle said when she first heard that Griner had been charged by the Russian government with “large-scale drug trafficking,” she couldn’t believe it.
“It blew my mind because I’m like big scale? I live with BG every day so there’s no way. So I knew it wasn’t true the moment I heard the accusation because I know my wife. “No,” he said. “It’s very sad , you know, which is in this position because BG isn’t doing anything large-scale in the drug trade. It was very difficult to hear this charge.”
Griner’s trial began last week after several delays. The photos of Griner walking into the courtroom are some of the only visuals Cherelle has seen of Griner. One of those photos worried her and made her ask Griner if she was okay and if she was “crazy at this point.”
“I wrote her honestly and said, ‘Hey honey, you know, I saw a picture of you and I know there’s such a thing as propaganda, but I have to ask, I’m willing to ask… are you okay?’ Are you crazy at this point? Understand that if you are, I love you even when you come back, we will love you whole, show yourself grace. If you’re not crazy, please help my conscience and give me, you know, a little more context to the picture,’” Sherrell recalls asking.
Cherelle said Brittney responded, “I was very weak at the time. But I promise I’m not crazy, not yet,” he said. “But I was scared because I turned the corner and it was like there were hundreds sitting inside with cameras and stuff waiting.”
The US State Department, which is working with Cherelle, said it found Brittney is being wrongfully detained.
Cherelle said she is working carefully to ensure her wife is released from prison and returned to the United States.
“At first they told me, you know, we’re going to try to book, we’re going to try to handle it behind the scenes and let’s not increase her value and you know shut up. You know, I did and respectfully, we It’s over 140 days at this point. That’s not working,” Cherelle said. “So I’m not going to be quiet anymore. I’m going to find that balance of, you know, harm versus help, pushing our government to do everything possible because they’re quiet, they’re not moving, they’re not doing anything. The woman is struggling and we must help her.”
