The British Grand Prix was red flagged on the first lap after Zhou Guanyu was thrown upside down at the first corner at Silverstone.
Mercedes’ George Russell and Williams’ Alex Albon were also involved in the worrying crash early in the race, but the drivers escaped without serious injury.
Zhou’s Alfa Romeo overturned after the collision at the first high-speed Abbey corner and traveled backwards into the barriers at speed before being thrown into the catch fence. The car ended up on its side between the tire wall and the fence, with nearby fans and photographers ducking for cover after the impact.

Mercedes driver George Russell jumps out of his car after the crash in the first corner
The 24-year-old Briton revealed his frustration at not being allowed to restart and told Sky Sports F1 what had happened at the first corner.
“Firstly, I’m glad to see that Zhou is doing well after an absolutely horrific incident,” he said. “In the end we took a risk starting hard because I made a mistake in qualifying and we were starting out of position. We thought that risk gave us the best chance later in the race but there was no traction at all. The hardest compound is it’s cold out there and I was swamped all the cars. The next thing I know I was touched, I was on Zhou’s side and that was it.
