Valtteri Bottas scored a surprise goal in front of home favorite Lewis Hamilton in the first practice session of the British GP, as the rain in Silverstone delayed any findings on whether Mercedes had really closed the gap at the front.
Mercedes has brought a series of car upgrades to the home game between Hamilton and teammate George Russell, with team boss Toto Wolf even insisting that the Silver Arrows are claiming their first win of the season.
However, the intermittent rain during the first hour of training meant that any comparisons between Mercedes and their fastest rivals for 2022 Red Bull and Ferrari would have to wait, with only half the grid release time.
Carlos Sainz had peaked for most of the season for the Scuderia before Alfa Romeo’s Bottas went faster on a slow drying track and Hamilton then also overtook Ferrari.

Hamilton, who finished half a second behind his former Mercedes teammate, and Russell, who did not post a time, had both done air tests during P1.
Red Bull didn’t have time either – with league leader Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez completing just rounds.

The session, which was applauded by more than 100,000 fans at Silverstone despite the weather, ended with a red flag after Lance Stroll, with dry tires, crashed into an upgraded Aston Martin.
There will be a record’s 400,000 spectator at the weekend in the home of British motorsport.
Of the 10 drivers who climbed several times, Charles Leclerc, hoping to restore his bid for the title, was fourth for Ferrari, while Haas ‘Mick Schumahcer was the only other driver within two seconds of Bottas’ benchmark.

Mercedes is one of many teams making their debut with major Silverstone updates, revealing a brand new floor design in an effort to improve the pace and stability of their W13 bounce car.
Their opponents also have car changes for the 10th race of a tough racing season, while Williams has the biggest upgrade of all in Alex Albon’s car, trying out a new Red Bull philosophy.
