The one-year-old fell from a window of the flat in Saville Green in Burmantofts. Emergency services were called shortly after 1pm on Saturday. The boy was taken to hospital, but his death was confirmed a short time later. West Yorkshire Police are investigating. In a statement, the force said: “At 1.25pm on Saturday July 2, police were contacted by the ambulance service attending Saville Green in Leeds, where a child had fallen from a flat window. Emergency services on scene at Saville Green. “The one-year-old boy was taken to hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead a short time later. “The incident is being treated as a sudden unexpected childhood death and we ask that people consider the family and respect their privacy at what is clearly a very difficult time for them.” An air ambulance was called to the tower building. Leeds City Council said it was assisting with inquiries. A spokesman said: “We are working closely with our partners at West Yorkshire Police to establish the full circumstances surrounding this very tragic incident.” We are supporting the family with an emergency transfer to another council property and are asking people to respect their privacy at what is a very difficult time for them.” Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn tweeted: “So sad and awful. All our thoughts are with those grieving the terrible loss of such a young life.” Local councilor Asghar Khan said in a statement: “We are saddened to learn of the sad and tragic death of a baby in our community of Burmantofts, our thoughts are very much with the family at this very sad time.”
