The actress has been very active on Twitter over the past couple of days, lambasting the Supreme Court for overturning Roe v. Wade — mostly bashing Clarence Thomas, it seems — and in the same breath … talking about women’s rights . Emphasis on the first part. WOMEN OF THE WORLD! They are taking away our rights to our bodies, our lives and even our names! They don’t call us “women” anymore. They call us “people who give birth” or “menstruates” and even “people with vaginas”! Don’t let them turn you off! Every person on earth owes you! — bettmiddel (@BetteMidler) July 4, 2022 @BetteMidler BM writes, “WOMENS OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights to our bodies, our lives, even our names! They don’t call us ‘women’ anymore, they call us ‘people who give birth’ or ‘menstruating people’, yet and “people with sinuses”! He adds fervently … “Don’t let them wipe you out! Every person on earth owes you!” Of course, this is about trans/non-binary people … and some call this POV transphobic. “Tolerance for one group need not mean intolerance for another,” writes Pamela Paul. https://t.co/PhKyVu4tcw — New York Times Opinion (@nytopinion) July 3, 2022 @nytopinion Interestingly, her comment dovetails into a now-viral op-ed published in the NYT this weekend, titled “The Far Right And Far Left Agree on One Thing: Women Don’t Count” … in which the author similar arguments about cisgender women being “erased” on the edges of both sides of the aisle … either for reasons of inclusion, or outright oppression. While some may agree, others say it’s a false equivalency to compare trying to be trans sensitive/using careful language to what the GOP seems to be doing (abortion ban) … suggesting that one is clearly more serious and terrible threat from the other is. Either way, we know where Bette stands on the matter. She seems to be a very old feminist who is very angry about all this. One crisis at a time, though, maybe.
