U.S. health officials have announced a new plan to expand access to monkeypox vaccines amid a continuing rise in cases.
Previously, the vaccine was only recommended for people with known exposure to monkey pox. Under the new strategy, vaccine suitability will be extended to anyone found in an area where monkey pox has been reported and to men who have sex with men who have had multiple sexual partners in an area known to have had chickenpox or the area. where the smallpox of monkeys spreads.

“It’s almost like expanding the definition of who a contact can be,” Jennifer McQuiston, DVM, MS, deputy director of the CDC’s High-Impact Pathology and Pathology Division, told reporters.
“We are examining the contacts [as] “People who may have recently had the type of exposure that would put them at high risk for monkey pox,” McQuiston said. “[If] “They attended a party or a place where the monkey pox was known to have spread, but we could not find them, we recommend that they come for a vaccine.”
CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, said people should be vaccinated within 2 weeks of exposure – “the sooner the better” – to reduce the risk of infection and disease.

HHS will provide 296,000 doses of Jynneos, an FDA-approved vaccine for monkey pox in the coming weeks, including 56,000 doses that will be immediately available. It expects to receive more than 750,000 doses that will be available in the summer, while another 500,000 will be released throughout the fall.
The jurisdiction may also request an older vaccine, ACAM2000, which is much more widely available but is also associated with more serious side effects.
Doses of Jynneos vaccine will be given priority for areas with the highest incidence and for people who cannot receive ACAM2000 because they are immunosuppressed, including people with HIV.
Jynneos is approved for adults 18 years of age and older and is administered in two doses 28 days apart. Maximum protection is achieved only 2 weeks after the second dose or 6 weeks after the start of the series, Walensky noted.
More than 4,700 cases of smallpox have been reported in 49 countries, including 306 in 28 U.S. jurisdictions, Walensky said. He said the country’s vaccine strategy would be updated as soon as more doses became available.
“With the number of cases and the number of jurisdictions increasing, the need for medical countermeasures, including vaccines, continues to grow,” Walensky said.
The CDC also began sending orthopox virus tests to five commercial lab companies last week and began training laboratories to improve their familiarity with the tests, according to Walensky. He said public health labs could process more than 10,000 tests a week.
Also Tuesday, the CDC announced it had activated the Emergency Operations Center to respond to the epidemic.
