That’s because Harnett, a two-year-old German shorthair pointer, was named after Sgt. Andrew Harnett, the Calgary police officer killed in the line of duty on New Year’s Eve 2020.
That night, Harnett was struck by a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
Vancouver Transit Police posted videos on Twitter and YouTube of Harnett and his human companion constable Lisa McKay on the job.
“Her favorite thing in the world is the ball,” McKay said. “She likes to come to work and work for the ball.
“She likes going on the train, walking around the stations, seeing people and then at the end of the day she likes to go out and chase the birds.”

Harnett is a novice service dog who just graduated on Thursday. He is the 10th police dog in the department’s history, according to a video posted on Twitter by Vancouver Transit Police.
“We want to thank the Metro Vancouver Transit Police for honoring Sergeant Andrew Harnett by naming a police dog in his memory,” Calgary police and Harnett’s family said in a statement.
“We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice that Andrew made and we take comfort in knowing that he will be remembered in Vancouver as well.”
