Police found two officers shot and a woman later pronounced dead at a hospital. “It was a very tragic situation that did not have to happen,” Deputy Chief of Staff Charles Hampton Jr. told a news conference on Monday. “The suspect went into the restaurant (to) order a sandwich and something was wrong with the sandwich that made him so upset that he decided to vent his anger on two of the employees here.”
A 36-year-old man was arrested Sunday night, Hampton said. He declined to identify the suspect, citing an ongoing investigation. Hampton said the suspect used a pistol during the incident.
The medical examiner identified the victim as Brittany Macon, 26 years old. The autopsy has not been completed, but the primary cause of death was gunshot wounds, Bertram Ennett, a Fulton County medical examiner, told CNN. A 24-year-old woman who was also shot is in critical condition, police said. Her 5-year-old son was also in the store at the time of the shooting.
Hampton said the controversy was over the amount of mayonnaise on the sandwich, but stressed that the focus should be on “gun violence”, not mayonnaise. “It just breaks my heart to know that someone has the audacity to point a gun and shoot someone for such a small amount of mayonnaise on a sandwich,” Willie Glenn, co-owner of this Subway, told CNN’s WSB subsidiary. TV.
“He was just a model employee,” Glenn told the WSB.
A Subway spokesman said: “Our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who were attacked in an unreasonable act of violence. At this time, our main concern is the members of the franchisee team and the guests inside the restaurant.”
There have been 74 homicides in Atlanta since the beginning of the year, according to the latest data from the police department. This is a 19% increase from the same period last year, the ministry said.
