Rescuers rushed to the spot about 200 meters from his house and found Joe at the bottom of the sewer. A firefighter entered the sewer to get him out. The child was taken to the hospital with hypothermia, but did not suffer any serious injuries. His father told reporters that he was “doing well” given the circumstances. He could not lift the heavy manhole cover on his own, said police spokesman Stefan Klate. “It is understandable that he climbed into the labyrinth of the tunnel at another point in the branched canal system and crawled through the pipes,” he added. The entire sewer system is now being monitored by cameras.
